Alpha Security
takes hands with the SAPS to fight crime

Trio task team Security Forum

Security companies in the Kempton Park area are in the process of joining hands with SAPS to fight crime.

The SAPS are in the process of organizing a radio base at each security company and a security radio at SAPS Trio base in Chloorkop.

This will enable SAPS to enlist the help of the security companies and vice versa, it will also ensure proper communication between the SAPS and the companies involved.

Any crime reported via this two way communication will enjoy the immediate attention of SAPS and ensure a quicker response from the SAPS.

How do I identify the normal reaction officer from the Shift seniors?

Management and I would like to keep you, "the client" informed of the reporting structure in our operations department. This will enable all clients to identify the rank of the person that is assisting you with your activations and emergencies.

First of all we have the Reaction Officer that will be identified by the one yellow stripe on his epilettes.

This officer is assigned to an area where he will do general patrols, premise checks where clients are on holiday, and attend to all signals inside his designated area.

Second we have the Shift Senior that will be identified by the two yellow stripes on his epilettes.

The senior has the same duties as a reaction officer except in the absense of the Shift Mananger and with shift change, he is also assigned to an area and have to attend to all incidents and signals within his assigned area.

Thirdly we have the Shift Manager that will be identified by the three yellow stripes and a castle on his epilettes.

He has a lot more duties and responsibilities than any other officer on the road, He is responsible for all weapons, vehicles, kits used, and lots more. He is also responsible for the Control Centre and the total response times. He is there to ensure that you receive the best service anyone can offer you.

Client Feedback

Dear Sir,

We have had a break-in on the 24 February 2010 - the culprits gained entry through our factory roof, went over our mezzanine floor and totally destroyed our security system by cutting every wire they could find - including the radio links.

Needless to say, it left us with no means of security as well as no contact with your control room if something would have happened again.

This is a letter of appreciation for Mr. Jaco Volschenk and also to let you know of the service that was provided by him in order to get us some kind of security until a technician could sort out the problem.

He tried to organize a technician that specific day, but all was to busy and could not attend to us.

He then out of his own and without any request from our side (I actually prepared myself to sleep at the factory that night) - arrived after his normal working hours at our premises and started to connect what he could for us to have at least some kind of protection.

He worked that night until just before 23h00 and managed to get us radio links and some of the system temporary repaired (the sirens were blown plus some relays). He also arranged that your patrol vehicles check out the premises on their rounds.

His service to us were greatly appreciated and under the circumstances to try and do technical work, when he is actually the sales consultant should be commended.

The system is now fully operational again with additional sensors to prevent the same scenario from happening again.

I would also like to use this oppertunity to thank your company for your services so far.

Thank you and kind regards,

Steve du Plessis Dextro Engineering CC

Monthly Security Tip
(Tip 1 2010)

Personal Security Tips For the Holidays

  • Advise your security company if you are going away and ensure that you supply all the necessary information regarding nearby key holders, in case of an emergency
  • Inform your neighbours of your holiday plans so that they can keep an eye on your property
  • Stop all newspaper deliveries and ask a friend or neighbour to collect your post. A bulging post box is a dead giveaway that you are not at home
  • If hiring a house sitter, ensure that you teach them how to use your alarm correctly
  • Double check that you have locked and secured all windows and doors before leaving home
  • Ensure that all your outside locks are a minimum of four lever locks or double cylinder security locks
  • Never leave a key in the inside of an outer door which has glass panels or glass near the door lock
  • Having security gates fitted on outer doors is a highly effective security measure that gives you an extra line of defence
  • Sliding doors can be secured simply by placing a piece of timber cut to size in the sliding rail. Make sure that sliding doors cannot be lifted vertically

Monthly Security Tip
(Tip 2 2010)

Access and Key Control

  • Do not allow strangers on your premises or in your house without having properly identifying the person, especially at night.
  • Implement proper key control measures.
  • Identify keys by means of codes instead of indicating in writing on labels to which gate/door access can be gained.
  • Keys to the safe must be kept on the person.
  • Never hide any keys in traditional places, such as in pot plants or under doormats.
  • Keys in the keyhole on the inside of the front or back door should be turned to avoid easy removal.
  • Never allow strangers to handle keys or look at key numbers.
  • Change locks when keys are lost.
  • Insert barring devices in door locks.
  • Remove keys from doors when leaving.

Monthly Security Tip
(Tip 3 2010)

Dogs are good deterrents

  • Dogs are good deterrents to burglars.
  • Even a small, noisy dog can be effective -- burglars do not like to have attention drawn to their presence.
  • Be aware, however, that trained guard dogs do not make good pets.
  • Obedience training and attack training are entirely different, and only the former is appropriate for a house pet.

Monthly Security Tip
(Tip 4 2010)

There is some debate about leaving drapes open or closed.
Some maintain that by closing them you indicate that you are not at home.
Others maintain that by leaving them open in order to look like you are at home you invite look-ins by potential burglars.

Still others recommend a combination, leaving some open (that look into rooms where there is little of value) while closing others those that look into what should be occupied rooms.
A nice compromise is to leave upstairs curtains open while first floor drapes shut. Whatever your decision remove expensive and inviting items from view from outside the window.

Monthly Security Tip
(Tip 5 2010)

Personal Safety Tips

  • Know all emergency numbers by heart.
  • If in doubt about the safety of an area, phone a police station for advice.
  • Be aware of your surroundings and the people around you.
  • Try not to walk around remote places at night.
  • Locate points of help like of police and fire stations, public telephones, hospitals and restaurants, or stores that are open late.
  • Trust your instincts. If something or someone makes you uneasy, avoid the person or leave.
  • Inform people of your whereabouts.
  • Limit your trips at night or at least take someone along with you.
  • Watch out if people start milling around you. This could be a sign you are about to be robbed.
  • If a stranger wants to use your phone and you want to help, leave him/her outside and phone on his/her behalf.
  • Always appear calm and confident, and know where you are going.
  • Don’t resist, especially if the perpetrator has a weapon, give up your purse or valuables, with no questions asked and move away.
  • Before you go to bed, pre-set the police station’s telephone number on your telephone, all you have to do in an emergency is to push re-dial.
  • Do not wear extravagant jewellery in public.

Monthly Security Tip
(Tip 6 2010)

Safety Rules within Cities:

The central areas of the larger cities (e.g. Johannesburg, Cape Town, Harare, Victoria Falls, Livingstone, Windhoek and Maputo) have a criminal element that preys on unwary tourists! Do not walk alone in apparently deserted places especially at night; wherever possible walk with a group. Be on the look out for pickpockets and bag snatchers. Do not carry more cash than required. Do not wear jewellery. Wear a money belt that fits under your clothes. Don't carry a lot of camera equipment especially in the major cities. Keep a photocopy of the first few pages of your passport, visas and air tickets, separately from the original documents. Beware of thieves posing as police officers.

Safety on Roads:

When driving in Africa there are a few simple rules, drive carefully and slowly (speed kills), remember animals and humans can cross the road at any time (quite often just in front of you), try never to drive at night, stay alert as roads are often poorly maintained and pot holes are to be found. Another fairly common occurrence are vehicles with missing headlights. Always wear you seat belts. If you are renting a car, keep the doors and windows locked while driving in the major cities. Car-jacking occurs fairly regularly but may not end in violence as long as you comply with demands made.

Stay aware of what's going on around you, you have a good chance of enjoying a problem-free safari!

Monthly Security Tip
(Tip 7 2010)

Child Safety

  • Never leave a child unattended in a vehicle! It can take as little as three seconds for someone to steal the car; the inside temperature may be harmful; the child may release the brake. You are also subject to a fine!
  • Give your young child the names of two Safety Persons who can always be trusted for rides, help, etc. Use a code word with children older than third grade.
  • Monitor what your child is doing on the computer! Instruct him or her not to give out personal information on the Internet or to make arrangements to meet in person someone he or she met online. Make sure your child knows how to be '"cyber-safe."
  • Remind your child that he or she is in charge of his or her body, and no one has the right to touch or talk about this body in a way that is inappropriate or makes the child feel uncomfortable.
  • ASK if there are guns in the house where your child is going to play. Discuss gun safety with your child.
  • Update photos four times a year for preschoolers and once a year after that. Keep a Child Profile booklet and Personal ID Kit or Amber Stick up-to-date with important data about your child.
  • Have your child wear items with his or her name on them only inside the house. Children are more likely to trust someone who calls them by name. Know what your child is wearing each day in case you need to describe him or her.
  • Teach your child to be kind and tolerant of others. Children need to understand and accept others who are different from them. Model this behavior yourself.

Rower druk verkeerde knoppie, ontbied self wag

      2009-10-11 21:43
      Cobus Coetzee

World Championships for the Performing Arts 2008

World Championships for the Performing Arts)
aandurf nie. Ek het besluit ek moet professionele hulp inroep, maar weet toe nie waar om te begin nie. Ek skakel toe die Annique salon en vra of hulle nie van iemand weet wat 'n voorkomskonsultant is nie.

So kry ek toe Bernie se nommer.

Star Performers of our reaction Unit

This month we would like to commend a new member to our staff compliment
      Mr. Micheal Tjante

Micheal started on the 6th of November 2008 at 06H00, but is no stranger to the "Armed Forces". Learning the ins and outs is normlly a 3 day experience and seeing action on your first day is not an everyday occurance.

Well for Micheal it was alot different

At about 09H00 he was sent to an alarm activation in Granaat Street Edleen, upon arrival he saw a man running around the corner into the next street. Knowing that he first has to check the premises, he continued into the yard and found a window broken. Immediatelly he knew that the suspitious person he saw was his suspect.

He got back into his vehicle and gave chase, when approching the suspect he started on a running rampage towards Van Riebeeck station, unfortunattly for Micheal he could not give chase on foot and left the vehicle to continue the chase, crossing the station he continued the chase on Pretoria Street and chaught up to the suspect on Palm Ave Kempton park. He then brought the suspect back to Granaat street to hand him over to Police. This is the kind of commitment the staff of Alpha Security shows toward the community. From all clients and mangement at Alpha.
We thank you for a job well done!!!!!!!

      Weekly Security Tip
      (Tip 1 2009)

      • Be aware that wearing expensive jewellery and sunglasses and having attractive items visible on the car seats and the dashboard may prompt criminals to follow you home.
      • If you feel you are being followed home, do not go home but drive to the nearest police station.
      • Never drive with your handbag visible in the car - this is an invite for loiterers at traffic lights to smash and grab your belongings.
      • Do not drive while talking on your cellphone - not only is this illegal but it is also an invite for criminals to smash your window and grab your phone.

      Weekly Security Tip
      (Tip 2 2009)

Make your home security system like an onion, not an egg Layers upon layers are not only the best deterrent, but the best defense against break ins.

It is easy for a criminal to bypass a single line of defense. Multiple layers not only slow him, but serve as a means to alert you or your neighbors that someone is trying to break in. Doing these "layered walk-aways" makes it more difficult for a criminal to meet his criteria of quick and unobserved entry. If, like the tip of an iceberg, enough of these deterrents are visible, most of the time the would-be intruder will simply choose not to even try. If he does try, then the layers he did not see will impede him.
A good example of a layered defense is rosebushes outside the window, double-locked, barred and safety coated side windows and something difficult to climb over inside under the window.

Monthly Security Tip (Tip 4 2009)

Many home doorlocks can be quickly bypassed with a knife or screwdriver slid in the gap between door and frame. After that the criminal can easily work the tongue of most cheap locks out of the door frame. A thin kitchen knife slid between sash windows can "tap" a normal window lock open. Hasps and locks can be hammered or twisted off in a few blows, or simply cut off with bolt cutters. Many sliding windows and doors can simply be lifted out of place.

Door: Look at the gap between your door and your door frame from the inside - can you see the lock's tongue? All it takes is a flip of the criminal's wrist while holding a screwdriver while on the outside to break away the thin doorjamb molding and expose that same gap. From there, it is another simple wrist gesture to jimmy the tongue out of the faceplate. Total elapsed time for break-in, about 10 seconds -- with minimal noise.
On ALL outside exit doors, buy locks that have locking tongues. Test this by holding the door open and locking the knob. Then attempt to depress the tongue into the door with your finger. Better locks will have a secondary tongue that doesn't move. The best locks will have entire tongues that don't move.
Window: Put "window stops" on the first floor and basement window frames. These often functionally amount to secondary and tertiary locks. The best kind are those that go through a moveable frame and lock it into place. Something as simple as drilling a hole through both frames when the window is closed and placing a nail in the hole will lock the windows in place. Other: Use hasps with protective shrouds. These make it harder for the criminal to hammer away the lock. If for some reason you have an outward swinging door, not only get the best lock possible, but place a safety plate (a small formed sheet of metal) over the tongue so it cannot be seen or easily manipulated. These slow down the criminal and make him work hard to get in. This entails him making more noise for longer periods of time, thereby increasing his chances of being detected.

Monthly Security Tip (Tip 5 2009)

Prevent Hijacking When Parking Your Vehicle when parking your vehicle:
      • Check your rear-view mirror to ensure that you are not being followed.
      • When returning home after dark, ensure that there is an outside light on or have someone meet you at the door.
      • When exiting your vehicle, be cautious and aware of anything that may be concealing a hijacker.
      • Never sit in your parked car without being conscious of your surroundings. Sleeping in a stationery vehicle is particularly dangerous.
      • When approaching your driveway, be on the lookout for suspicious vehicles/persons.

      Monthly Security Tip
      (Tip 6 2009)

      Know your environment:
      • If approached by a stranger while in your car, drive off if possible and/or use your hooter to attract attention.
      • Be constantly on the lookout for suspicious looking characters or vehicles and do not hesitate to report them to the Police or ADT.
      • Always be on the alert for potential danger and be on the lookout for possible escape routes and safe refuge along the way.
      • Always have your identity document and driver's licence in your possession and a pen and notepad ready to make necessary notes.
      • If possible, avoid driving in the dark. Hijackers may stage a minor accident, e.g. if your car is bumped from behind and you do not feel comfortable with having them involved in the situation, drive to the nearest Police Station for help.
      • Never open your vehicle window or door for any stranger. If a suspicious person is near your unoccupied car, go on to the nearest public area and ask for assistance.

      Monthly Security Tip
      (Tip 7 2009)

Put your mail on hold whilst out of town. This is mostly for on the street mail boxes or apartment boxes.
However, if you have an mail slot in your door you might also want to consider doing this if anyone can look through a window and see the mail stacking up.
A great number of modern decorative doors have windows that would allow someone to see collecting mail. In any case, remember that we are talking about the US post office, so tell them to stop your mail a couple of days before you leave.
If you don't do this mail can still be delivered and be left on the floor.

      Monthly Security Tip
      (Tip 9 2009)

Leave a stereo on (programmable TV)

A deserted house "feels" empty. People make noise, noise means vibrations. The difference between the vibrations of music and conversation are in the timing.
Music is far more consistent, whereas speech is more erratic. This broken pattern is more consistent with someone being home.
By turning your stereo on a talk station instead of a music station it creates a more realistic impression that someone is home. The same effect is created by having a TV turn itself on in the afternoon and evening.
(A note on cost. Modern TVs do not draw as much electricity as older ones did. As such it is not that expensive to leave a TV on for the noise.

      Monthly Security Tip
      (Tip 10 2009)

      Answering machine

"we can't get to the phone right now"
Even when you in town, your phone message should never say that you are not home.
Set the machine to answer in five rings, answering too soon or too late indicate nobody at home.
Five rings could be that you really can't get to the phone.
In consolidated phone/answering machine models turn down the ringer.
In separate phone answering machine systems unplug phone from the machine.

      Monthly Security Tip
      (Tip 11 2009)

Reducing the Risk of a Hijacking When Entering or in Your Vehicle

      • Have your key ready, but not visible.
      • Inspect the outside and inside of the vehicle before unlocking it.
      • Know your destination and directions to it, and be alert should you get lost.
      • Always drive with your windows and doors locked and/or closed.
      • Make a mental note of any Police Stations in the area.
      • When dropping a passenger off, make sure that they are safely in their own vehicle before departing.
      • Avoid driving through high crime or unfamiliar areas.
      • Avoid driving when the roads are quiet.
      • Drive in the centre lane away from pedestrians where possible.
      • If possible, never drive alone.
      • NEVER pick up hitch-hikers.
      • Change your routes on a regular basis.
      • Do not leave windows open more than 5cm.

Reaction Officer Risks Life to apprehend Bad Guy

It is December 28 2008. The Time: 12H07pm.

Alpha Control Centre receives an Alarm Signal sent from a clients house in Springbok street Birchleigh.
The Control Centre activated the vehicle in the area to respond to the call.

Mr. Grobler starts up his Vehicle in anticipation; he will get there as soon as possible as Springbok street is against a Field and is known for its crimes in the Alpha Circle. At 12H11pm he arrives at the premises after fighting with traffic lights and stop signs top get there, only to find a family traumatised and in complete distress due to an armed robbery they had just experienced. The client immediately gave a description of one of the assailants. Mr. Grobler decided to start his search in the Field behind the residence of the victims, the moment he entered the field he noticed a suspects the client described, he continued to follow them.

"I was approximately 100meters from the suspects when they noticed that I was following them, a gun fight broke out and bullets flew left and right. I returned fire and they fled. I followed them on foot for approximately four kilometres to a nearby informal settlement; I noticed one of the suspects entering a house. I followed the suspect into the house where there were people all around me. But arresting the suspect was my number one priority" Mr Grobler said.

Within minutes of arresting the suspects the SAPS and the client arrived at the settlement where the client identified the suspect, and he was taken by the SAPS.

Alpha Security commends Mr. Gobbler for his bravery and thanks the SAPS and the client for being on the scene of the arrest to assist Mr. Gobbler with a speedy arrest. Mr. Gobbler will be giving evidence to ensure a speedy trail and a speedy conviction.

      Well done Mr. Grobler

The South African
Junior Golf Foundation

The South African Golf Foundation was formed at the Royal Johannesburg Golf Club on 18 October 1960, initially to promote junior golf in the Transvaal. The movement was started on the strength of a R500 donation received from the “Follow the Sun Nomads” with Messrs. Basil Keartland and Harry Oppenheimer as its first Chairman and President respectively.

Mr Keartland forecast the “…playing of Junior Inter-Team, Junior Inter-Provincial and perhaps even International matches…” These words were prophetic, because all these thoughts expressed by him have............. Read More

Your monthly premium - What are you paying for?
